A very successful season, the first in NCAA Division I, came to a close for the Grand Canyon women's basketball team Thursday.
In the first round of the Women's Basketball Invitational, top-seeded Grand Canyon lost 52-51 to Boise State at Antelope Gymnasium.
GCU's
Deanna Daniels, who led all scorers with 24 points, hit two free throws with 1:13 remaining to cut the Broncos lead to 52-51, but it was the last points for either team. GCU's last chance to extend its season came with just four seconds remaining, but junior guard
Kaitlyn Petersen was unable to hit a three-point attempt.
"Even through adversity, our players – across the board – have shown great character, togetherness and a sense of pride," said GCU coach Trent May. "I'm proud to be their coach and thankful for an incredible staff."
Grand Canyon, picked to finish eighth in its first season in the Western Athletic Conference, finished the year 21-9 overall. The Antelopes, ineligible for the WAC and NCAA tournaments due to first-year Division I transition rules, placed third in the league with a 10-6 record. Eligible for both the WNIT and WBI, GCU came into the 16-team tournament as the No. 1 seed in the West Region.
Boise State, tied for third in the Mountain West, improved its mark to 18-13 and will travel to Stephen F. Austin, a 59-51 winner over Texas State Thursday, for a quarterfinal game this weekend.
Neither team led by more than six points – GCU had two first-half six-point leads. Boise State had a four-point lead in the second half.
The Antelopes had a season-high 23 turnovers in the loss and went 0-for-8 from 3-point range in the second half.
"(The 23 turnovers) were very uncharacteristic of us," said May. "Our shot selection was uncharacteristic of us, too. Give credit to Boise State for taking us out of our groove.
"You see it a lot in tournament games where it's ugly early. We hoped to get a rhythm and settle down, but we couldn't find a sustaining rhythm."
It was the fourth straight year, and fifth time in the last six years, GCU has advanced to the post season. It is also the fourth straight year the program has won 20 or more games.
Daniels finished with a double-double, adding 10 rebounds.
Johnna Brown had her team-best seventh double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Petersen had eight points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals.
