Grand Canyon split matches Saturday to finish 2-1 and third at the USA Volleyball Collegiate Challenge at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.
The Antelopes (3-2) beat Bakersfield 3-2 and lost to Pepperdine, winners of the event, 5-0. Hawai'i was second.
In the win over Bakersfield, Grand Canyon got wins from the No. 1 pair of
Mackenzie Phelps and
Kelli Dallmann (21-12, 21-13), the No. 3 group of
Chloe Jenkins and
Kami Dickerson (14-21, 22-20, 15-9) and the No. 4 tandem of
Kaitlynn Ausmus and
Alex Goodman (17-21, 23-21, 15-7).
Following the duals, the five teams, including CSU Northridge, began a two-day single-elimination pairs tournament. Phelps and Dallmann and GCU's No. 2 group of
Shannon Dugan and
Megan Glennie received first round byes and will not compete until Sunday. Phelps and Dallmann are the tournament's No. 3 seed. Dugan and Glennie are No. 8.
Jenkins/Dickerson, the No. 11 seed, advanced to the round of 16 with a 21-12, 21-15 victory. Ausmus/Goodman and the No. 5 group of
Britta Forsythe and
Brandy Grant lost in the first round.
Sunday's action begins at 9 a.m.
