Grand Canyon concluded day two of the Red Dirt Classic in St. Geoge, Utah falling in extra innings to an undefeated Idaho State team by a final score of 10-8. The Antelopes fell to 0-2 on the day and 1-3 overall with the loss to the Bengals.
"I thought we swung the bats really well against Idaho State, we continue to bring an aggressive approach to the plate," said head coach Ann Pierson.
The bats came alive early for GCU, as the 'Lopes jumped to an early 7-3 lead after just two innings.
In inning one, Haley Walker scored on a
Camree Wartman infield single and then later in the opening frame
Claire Zampini reached on an infield single, scoring
Jenna Coates.
In the home half of the second,
Lauren Regester cracked a double down the left field line, scoring Wartman and
Walker. In the same inning, Coates also hit a two-bagger, pushing Regester and
Kelsey Barak across the plate and giving the 'Lopes a 7-3 lead.
Idaho State came roaring back, scoring two runs in the third and three in the fourth, to take the lead 8-7.
GCU wasn't done, as they knotted the score at eight in the bottom of the sixth on a Barak home run over the left field fence.
With neither team able to push across a run in the seventh, extra innings were needed to find a winner.
Idaho State was able to score twice in the top half of the frame to take the lead. The 'Lopes were unable to put together a rally of their own in the eighth and came up just short against a tough Idaho State team.
Barak finished the contest with three hits and also scored three runs for the 'Lopes.
Kailey Regester, who got the nod in the circle, also finished with two hits.
Wartman finished both of Saturday's games with multi-hit performances, going 2-for-5 in game two with an RBI.
Game One
In a game which was knotted at two heading into the home half of the sixth inning, Weber State used back-to-back home runs to jump out to a 5-2 advantage.
Henry singled down the right field line in the top of the seventh, but the 'Lopes were unable to rally together any more offense and fell to the Wildcats. The 'Lopes record now sits at 1-2 on the young 2014 season.
Wartman was a bright spot for GCU, as the freshman went 2-for-3 at the plate and accounted for one of the two runs scored for the 'Lopes, while playing in her home state. Wartman scored in the top of the sixth on a
Coates sacrifice fly.
Kiki Sepulveda saw her first action in the circle, striking out three in six innings of work.
"Our girls brought great energy once again today," added Pierson. "After losing game one, they bounced back and gave great effort the rest of the day."
GCU will wrap up play at the Red Dirt Classic with a Sunday afternoon contest with Southern Utah. First pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m.
