Antelopes Take on McKendree Sunday
Ben Ponnet had a school-record 29 kills, but Grand Canyon fell short in a Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association marathon, 3-2, to Lindenwood at Hyland Arena in St. Charles, Mo., Saturday.
The Antelopes (5-5, 0-2) lost by set scores of 25-18, 16-25, 25-27, 26-24, 19-17. There were 13 ties in the fifth set and the match last two hours and eight minutes. Lindenwood improved to 8-2 and 3-1 in the MIVA.
"Unfortunately getting close isn't good enough in a conference match. We have to win those," said GCU coach Jeremy Price.
It is already GCU's seventh five-set match of the season. The Antelopes are 4-3 in contests going the duration.
GCU wraps up its three-match weekend road trip at McKendree (1-10) Sunday with a 2 p.m. (AZ time) match. Fans can follow live links to the contest at www.gculopes.com.
"He was an offensive force tonight," said Price of Ponnet.
Ponnet hit .426 for the match with nine errors and 47 attempts. He had eight kills in the third set, seven in the first and six in the fifth. GCU's middles, Keaton Berry and Connor Dougherty, were also productive. Berry hit .467 with nine kills and two errors in 15 tries. Dougherty had 10 kills on 25 attempts and three errors.
Senior setter Keith Smith had 58 assists, tying his career high. It is his third 58-assist match. He equaled the number at Pacific on March 16, 2013 and in his sophomore season vs. NJIT on Jan. 13, 2012.
GCU thwarted off four match points before a service ace gave the Lions the victory. GCU had a chance to end the match in four. Tied 23-23, Erik Jansen got a kill on an assist from libero Jared Morrison, but the Lions forced the fifth set with three straight points, the last two coming on blocks.
The teams went extra time in the third, too, but the Antelopes prevailed. Lindenwood held off two set points. A Berry kill gave GCU a 24-23 lead. Tied at 24-24, A Dougherty kill gave the lead back to the 'Lopes. Tied at 25-25, GCU finished the set on back-to-back kills by Ponnet from Smith.
Morrison and Gerrard Lipscombe had 14 and 13 digs, respectively.
Both teams hit for high percentages. GCU hit .291 (64-23-141) and Lindenwood finished at .314 (70-20-159).
