Deanna Daniels scored a career-high 32 points to lead Grand Canyon to a 67-63 Western Athletic Conference victory over Kansas City at Swinney Recreation Center in Kansas City, Mo., Thursday.
Daniels previous career-high was 29, scored in a 74-63 win over Kansas City at GCU Arena on Feb. 1.
"Some nights you get on a roll and it becomes contagious and her teammates found her," said GCU coach Trent May. "This was one of those nights when she was hot and she can be tricky and tough to defend because she does a good job finding the right angles."
Daniels was 11-for-14 from the field, including 1-for-2 from 3-point range. She hit 9-for-11 at the charity stripe.
The Antelopes went on a 7-0 run late in the first half and led the rest of the game, though never by more than nine, 63-54, with 1:12 remaining. Daniels had 18 points in the second half.
"Conference road wins are tough to come by," added May. "We played well and this is another step in the right direction."
GCU improved to 18-8 overall and 7-6 in the WAC. Kansas City dropped to 10-17, 6-8.
Daniels was the lone double-figure scorer for GCU, but
Johnna Brown was active on the stat sheet, too. Brown had nine points, 12 rebounds and seven assists.
"(Johnna) and Deanna complemented each other extremely well," said May.
The Antelopes shot 57.1 percent in the second half (11-for-19) and 48 percent (24-for-50) for the game.
Tied at 22, GCU went on a 7-0 first-half run.
Justine Johnson started it with a 3-pointer.
Jenna Pearson and Daniels both scored on layups. GCU led 31-26 at halftime.
Daniels had 18 of 36 second-half points.
Kaitlyn Petersen hit a key 3-pointer when the 'Roos had cut the lead to one and sophomore
Madison Craig knocked down a trey with 7:32 to go when the hosts and cut the GCU lead to four.
