In front of a festive atmosphere at the GCU Sand Volleyball Courts, Grand Canyon opened its second season of competition with its inaugural Purple-Black Sand Volleyball Dual Tuesday.
Food trucks and fans surrounded the new courts stationed between Brazell Stadium and Antelope Gymnasium.
"The support from faculty, game management, the food trucks, staff, it was a great turnout and exciting atmosphere," said GCU coach Kris Naber.
"It was a great way to get excited for the season," added assistant coach Whitney Estes.
The two-hour scrimmage was won by the Purple team 3-2.
"We saw a lot of positives and we saw a lot of things we need to work on," said Naber. "It gives us direction before we get started at (Tucson) on March 8."
Naber said she liked the play of the team's No. 1 pair of
Kelli Dallmann and
Mackenzie Phelps. "They did a great job today and they were consistent." Dallmann and Phelps defeated
Shannon Dugan and
Alex Goodman 21-15, 21-6.
Also catching the eye of the coaching was the play of
Kaitlynn Ausmus and
Kaylee Dombroski along with
Britta Forsythe and
Brandy Grant.
"Both groups continue to show improvement and make great adjustments," added Naber. "They're working on moving up the ladder."
The Ausmus/Dombroski pair defeated
Kami Dickerson and
Megan Glennie 21-19, 21-17. Forsythe and Grant had an impressive showing in a 21-14, 21-11 victory over
Brooke Razo and
Mia Sakasegawa.
GCU's regular season opens March 8 at Tucson with duals against Arizona and Arizona Christian. The home season starts March 28-29 with duals and the GCU Sand Volleyball Tournament with Nebraska and Arizona.
