Sand Volleyball Opens With Split

With three of five matches going to the third set, Grand Canyon opened the program's second sand volleyball season with a tough 3-2 loss to host University of Arizona Saturday.
The Antelopes rebounded later in the afternoon with a 5-0 victory against Arizona Christian
Against U of A, GCU's No. 1 and No. 2 pairs were victorious, while the No. 3 and No. 4 teams lost tough three-setters.
Alex Goodman and Kaitlynn Ausmus, at No. 3, and Kami Dickerson and Chloe Jenkins, at No. 4, both won second sets to force a third. Goodman-Ausmus lost 16-14 in the third while Dickerson-Jenkins lost 15-12.
At No. 1 Mackenzie Phelps and Kelli Dallmann won in straight sets 21-14, 21-17.
At No. 2, Shannon Dugan and Megan Glennie dropped the first set 8-21 before rallying to win the next two, 21-18, 15-10.
"I felt like our girls competed at a high level today," said coach Kris Naber. "It's really evident where our program is headed and how much work we have put in. We just need to do a better job of closing the door when we can."
Four pairs won in straight set and the fifth by injury default in GCU's 5-0 win over Arizona Christian.
Dallmann and Dugan were named to the Arizona Invitational All-Tournament Team.
GCU competes in matches at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., next week.
