Grand Canyon had its homecourt win streak halted by first-place Idaho Saturday.
The Antelopes (17-8, 6-6) lost to the Vandals (19-8, 12-1) 68-54 at GCU Arena. Grand Canyon had won 10 straight in the building and were 9-0 this season prior to losing to the Western Athletic Conference leaders.
"They're a very good team and there's a reason why they're No. 1 in the conference," said GCU coach Trent May. "They shot the ball extremely well. We started the game shooting well, but it fizzled out."
For the game, Idaho shot 49.1 percent (27-for-55). It shot 56 percent (14-for-25) in the first half. Grand Canyon shot 29.7 percent in the second half (11-for-37) and 31.4 percent (22-for-70) for the game.
"We had some good looks. I don't think we took a lot of bad shots. Sometimes they don't go in," said May. "This time of year, especially against good opponents, you've got to hit shots and get stops. It sounds simplistic, but it does come down to those things. Today, they shot the ball better than we did."
Grand Canyon led much of the first half. Its last lead was at the 9:37 mark, 19-17, on a 3-pointer from freshman
Astrea Reed.
Deanna Daniels had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Johnna Brown had eight points and 13 rebounds.
Kaitlyn Petersen scored seven points and dished out eight assists. Reed scored seven points.
Grand Canyon goes on the road next week for games Thursday at Kansas City and Saturday at Chicago State. The regular season ends with games at March 6 and 8 against New Mexico State and Texas Pan-American, respectively. The final home games, due to construction at GCU Arena, have been moved to Antelope Gymnasium.
