The Grand Canyon University men's basketball team mounted a furious rally but was unable to overcome a 16-point second half deficit, falling 83-77 to Idaho at Memorial Gym in Moscow, Idaho.
The loss drops the Antelopes to 13-12, 8-4 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Vandals improved to 12-16, 5-8 in the WAC.
GCU found themselves down 68-52 with 8:50 left in the game and slowly began to chip away at the lead.
Daniel Alexander, who finished with a career-high 22 points, would hit three of his six 3-pointers and GCU found themselves down seven at 76-69 with 3:48 remaining.
The Vandals, who did not make a field goal in the game's final 6:40, played just enough defense and sank seven free throws to pull out the win, splitting the season series between the two WAC foes.
Killian Larson scored 14 and grabbed 20 rebounds for his 17
th double-double of the season.
Jerome Garrison finished with 26 points on 10-22 shooting.
Idaho's Stephen Madison scored 34 on 12-15 shooting from the floor and 9-10 from the line.
GCU was outrebounded 40-39, but held a 23-13 lead over the final 20 minutes. The Vandals' bench came up big and outscored the 'Lopes' non-starters, 27-7.
Idaho led 34-32 at the break and was aided by a 6:23 scoreless drought midway in the half by the Antelopes. The Vandals outscored GCU 12-2 during that stretch to grab a 28-21 lead. Garrison would score the next eight points for GCU to propel them to a 32-30 advantage, in what would be their last lead of the game. A pair of free throws and a forced backcourt turnover and layup in the final 52 seconds sent Idaho to the locker rooms with the lead.
The loss drops GCU to 2.0 games behind WAC leader Utah Valley (10-2). UVU visits Kansas City later tonight. The Antelopes are also 1.5 games back of second-place New Mexico State (10-3) and are 2.0 games ahead of Chicago State (6-6).
Grand Canyon will now return home for their final two home games of the regular season. GCU will host Kansas City on Feb. 27 and Chicago State on March 1. Both games will tip at GCU Arena at 7 p.m. The games will be televised on Cox7 in Phoenix and streamed online at
