The Grand Canyon University men's basketball team (7-7) hosts fellow Division I transitioning school Abilene Christian (6-6) today at GCU Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. as the Lopes look to win their third straight game and improve to 4-1 in the midst of their eight-game homestand. ABILENE CHRISTIANThis marks the second meeting between GCU and Abilene Christian. The two teams last met in 1984-85 in an 80-64 Antelopes victory in Phoenix on Dec. 28, 1984. The Wildcats are also in the process of transitioning to NCAA Division I and are in their second year.
WHAT A WIN!GCU won an exciting 68-65 game over New Mexico at GCU Arena on Dec. 23 to snap UNM's five-game win streak. The Lopes avenged an 80-68 loss from last season to the Lobos, who participated in the 2014 NCAA Tournament after winning the Mountain West Conference Tournament. GCU was led by Joshua Braun with 18 points, while Daniel Alexander added a season-best 17 points. The Lopes led for the last 10 minutes and 15 seconds after moving ahead 45-44 following an Alexander free throw. UNM made it interesting in the end, trailing by three with five seconds to play, but GCU forced a turnover to secure the win.
BRAUN STEPPING UPGCU redshirt freshman Joshua Braun burst onto the scene with a 21-point, seven-rebound effort against Central Michigan on Nov. 29 and scored a career-best 22 points on Dec. 17 against Incarnate Word. Braun played a season-high 39 minutes in that same game versus UIW. Against Bethune-Cookman on Dec. 15, he had a season-best eight rebounds and helped guide GCU to an impressive 68-65 win over New Mexico on Dec. 23 with a team-high 18 points. Braun has scored in double figures six times already this season, including his last four.
BRAUN NAMED WAC PLAYER OF THE WEEKJoshua Braun was tabbed as the Western Athletic Conference's Men's Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 15-21. Braun averaged 18.3 points and 6.7 rebounds per game for the Lopes as they went 2-1 on the week.
