Grand Canyon (2-4) wraps up their two-game Midwest road trip tonight with a game against UIC (2-5) at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Ill. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. (AZ time). The Antelopes will be looking to record their first road win of the season, after dropping their first two. GCU has outrebounded their opponent in the last three games, after being beaten on the glass during the first three contests. UICThis marks the first meeting between GCU and UIC. The Flames are 2-5 on the season with wins over Western Illinois and St. Xavier. UIC dropped its last game on Nov. 29 at Dayton, 75-41. The Flames dropped a 72-71 decision to DePaul in their season opener, a squad that defeated Stanford last weekend.
LAST TIME OUTGCU dropped a 79-77 decision to Central Michigan at McGuirk Arena in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. The Antelopes shot a season-best 57.4% from the floor and hit nine 3-pointers during the contest. Josh Braun led all scorers with 21 points and also had seven rebounds. GCU was hurt by 15 turnovers which led to a 15-2 deficit in points off turnovers. Royce Woolridge had 14 points for GCU, while Ryan Majerle and Jerome Garrison each had 12.
FINDING THE MARKThe 57.4 percent shooting (27-for-47) from the floor was the season-best mark for the Lopes and the second-best shooting night since Coach Majerle took over the program last season. GCU shot 57.7 percent in a win over San Diego Christian on Nov. 29, 2013, a 91-61 win. Saturday was the sixth time under Majerle that the team has amassed an above 50% shooting night, with the team going 4-2 in those contests.
STEPPING UPGCU's redshirt freshman Joshua Braun burst onto the scene with a 21-point seven-rebound effort against Central Michigan on Nov. 29. Braun also played a season-high 25 minutes in the game. Braun is no stranger to these types of performances as he averaged 18.5 points and 9.4 rebounds as a junior at Boulder Creek High School in Anthem, Ariz. He scored in double-digits in all 27 games that season and had 10 or more rebounds in 12 contests. His senior season, with Westwind Prep, was cut short due to injury. In addition to his seven boards on Saturday, Braun pulled down six on Nov. 25 vs. Buffalo.
