DeWayne Russell, who transferred to GCU from Northern Arizona last season, played in his first game as an Antelope and quickly showed his potential to be a standout on the squad, scoring 16 points. He dropped 14 in the first half and finished the game shooting 7-for-16 from the floor, adding three rebounds and two assists in 37 minutes.
Royce Woolridge was the game's high scorer with 18. Josh Braun added seven points and seven boards.
The Antelopes started slowly in the opening half, finding themselves down 25-11 over the first 10 minutes. The Lopes then outscored the Hoosiers 18-12 over the next eight minutes and trailed 42-31 at the break. The Hoosiers drained seven 3-pointers in the half.
Indiana shot 51.4 percent in the second half (18-for-35) to put the game out of reach.
GCU shot 38.8 percent during the contest, including only 2-for-16 from behind the arc. The two 3's made equaled a low in the Majerle era (also Dec. 30, 2013 vs. Middle Tenn. St.). The Antelopes were outrebounded 52-35 and 21-11 on the offensive glass.
For the second-straight game the Lopes were 12-for-15 from the line (80%), equaling their second-best mark of the season. Both teams secured the ball well, as the Lopes committed only six turnovers, a season low, while the Hoosiers had four.
Grand Canyon now returns home where they play their next eight-straight games at GCU Arena. Up first will be Bethune Cookman at 7 p.m. on Dec. 15. The game will be broadcast live on the Cox7 and can be heard on radio on KXXT 1010 AM Family Values Radio (also available on the KXXT TuneIn Radio app).
