The Grand Canyon men's basketball team (2-3) returns to action tonight for a game with Central Michigan (4-0) in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. The game will serve as a homecoming for head coach Dan Majerle, who's number 44 is retired in the McGuirk Arena rafters. The game will mark the second road contest of the season for the Antelopes, after losing their regular season opener at top-ranked Kentucky. GAME NOTESVS. CENTRAL MICHIGANThis marks the first meeting between GCU and Central Michigan. The Chippewas are 4-0 on the season with wins over Alma, Youngstown State, Maine, and Arkansas-Pine Bluff. CMU has outscored their opponents 332-218 in four games so far, holding Pine Bluff to just 43 points on Nov. 23 at McGuirk Arena. GCU's game will be the fifth straight home contest for CMU to open the season.
MAJERLE RETURNS TO HIS ALMA MATERGCU head coach Dan Majerle is returning to Central Michigan, where he averaged more than 20 points in three of his four seasons as a player with the Chippewas and was an All-Mid-American Conference selection each year of his career. During his senior season in 1988, he averaged 23.7 points and 10.8 rebounds while posting a 52.2 field-goal percentage. He completed his career at CMU ranked second all-time in scoring, steals and field-goal percentage. Marjele is a CMU Hall of Famer, as his retired No. 44 jersey hangs in the rafters of McGuirk Arena.
LAST TIME OUTGCU dropped an 80-64 decision to Buffalo on Nov. 25 at GCU Arena to close out their four-game homestand. The Lopes were hampered by a 32.2 field goal percentage (19-for-59), while the Bulls boasted an impressive 51.9 percentage from the floor (28-for-54). Royce Woolridge (19) and Ryan Majerle (16) each established new GCU career-highs in points, while Jerome Garrison added 15 points. GCU held the 40-39 advantage in rebounds, but were outdueled by Buffalo 36-20 in the paint.
RARE ROAD TRIPGCU's trip to Central Michigan and Illinois-Chicago is just the second of six stints away from GCU Arena
this season. The Lopes return home for two games on Dec. 6 and 9, play at Indiana on Dec. 13, and then will play eight straight in Phoenix. Following that long homestand, the Lopes will hit the road just three more times. Last season, GCU made 10 road trips, playing 18 games away from home.
