Grand Canyon dropped its opener at the Navy Classic, 52-45 to Northern Kentucky, at Alumni Hall in Annapolis, Md., Friday.
The Antelopes (1-3) led by as much as 10 in the first half, but after shooting 41.4 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes, hit just 25 percent (6-of-24) of their shots in the second. Northern Kentucky (3-3) outscored GCU 25-5 at the free-throw line.
Madison Craig had a career-best 12 points, hitting 4-of-7 from 3-point range.
Jessica Gajewski also had 12 points.
Courtney Hayes had eight points, six assists, four rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots.
After trailing 5-0, GCU got its first lead on a layup from freshman
Mikaehla Connor. It gave the Lopes a 10-9 advantage with 9:31 left in the first half. With 2:59 left in the half, Gajewski hit a jumper to put the Lopes up 28-18.
Northern Kentucky battled back in the second half to take the lead. Craig tied the game 42-42 on a 3-pointer, but the Norse finished the final 4:23 of the game on a 10-3 run.
"Tough teams can't be tough in only comfortable situations. That's not toughness," said GCU coach Trent May. "Until we change that about ourselves, we will keep getting these results."
Connor finished with eight points and five rebounds.
Cheyenne Hedrington had five rebounds and three steals.
