Grand Canyon (19-11) got off to a good start at the GCU Invitational with a pair of wins at Antelope Gymnasium Friday.
The Lopes opened play with a 3-0 victory over UMass Lowell Friday afternoon and finished the initial day of the tournament with a 3-1 victory over Incarnate Word Friday night.
The Antelopes won by set scores of 25-17, 25-12, 25-14 over UMass Lowell and 25-19, 25-19, 24-26, 25-13. over Incarnate Word.
"Teams can go into this tournament like their season is over after conference, but our girls really did a good job all week preparing and it showed in both matches," said GCU coach Kris Naber.
The win was the second of the season over UMass Lowell.
In the straight set victory, GCU held UMass Lowell to a .000 hitting percentage with only 19 kills with 19 errors on 93 attempts. The Antelopes hit .315, including a .409 clip in the second set.
Shannon Dugan had a match-best 15 kills. The Lopes had 42 as a team.
Setter
Michelle Steagall had 32 assists, nine digs and two block assists.
Natalie Tardy had three of GCU's six service aces. Senior libero
Mackenzie Phelps had a match-best 16 digs.
Against the Cardinals, Dugan picked up her 16th double-double of the season with 18 kills and 18 digs. She added six blocks, including one solo. Sophomore
Megan Byrnes had 11 kills. Tardy and freshman
Gracie Dimond each had nine. It was a career-best for Dimond, who also had six blocks.
After Incarnate Word came back to take the third set, GCU had its best hitting and defensive set of the match. The Lopes hit .344, while the Cardinals managed to hit just .027.
Phelps had 18 digs and Steagall added 44 assists and seven digs. Freshman
Emily Vitel added 11 digs.
"We're looking forward to getting back at it Saturday," added GCU assistant coach Megan Taylor. "'Together' has been this team's quote all week and they played together all day today."
The five-team invitational includes other transitioning and independent programs. GCU and Omaha were the only teams to go 2-0 on Friday. NJIT went 1-1 and Incarnate Word and UMass Lowell were both 0-2.
"We showed a lot of energy today, especially after the third set against Incarnate Word," added Naber.
GCU takes on NJIT at 2 p.m. Saturday and Omaha, in the final match of the tournament, at 7. The tournament starts back up Saturday morning at 9 with UMass Lowell taking on NJIT.
