Grand Canyon jumped out to a 12-0 lead and went on to a 76-52 victory over Western State College at GCU Arena Wednesday.
It was the first win of the season for the Lopes, evening their record at 1-1. Sophomore
Cheyenne Hedrington finished with a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 14 rebounds.
Courtney Hayes had 14 points on 6-of-6 shooting and added five steals and
Jessica Gajewski added a game-high 18 points, hitting 4-of-7 from three-point range. Western State dropped to 0-3.
"We played sound team basketball," said GCU coach Trent May. "We did a really good job crashing the boards in the first half and a good job not giving up any fastbreak points.
"We're still not shooting as well as I'd like, but we're getting good looks and eventually we'll knock them down."
Hedrington had 13 rebounds and nine points in the first half. She finished with eight offensive boards. Hayes added five assists and five rebounds.
Astrea Reed had eight points, seven rebounds and three steals.
"We played with good energy and when we do that we do a lot of good things," added May. "When fatigue sets in we make some mistakes and we have to fight through that."
A pair of Gajewski treys, two steals and ensuing layups by Hayes got the Lopes off to a great start. When Hedrington scored off a Mountaineers miss, the Lopes led 12-0.
Up 12 at the half, GCU quickly extended its lead to over 20 points. Less than five minutes in, GCU had a 17-8 run. A Hedrington 3-pointer made it 54-33.
Devyn Edwards came off the bench to score eight points. In six minutes of action,
Zelor Massaquoi had five rebounds.
The Antelopes had 13 steals and helped force 23 Western State turnovers. GCU held the Mountaineers to only 25 percent (7-of-28) shooting in the second half.
The Antelopes travel to Clarksville, Tenn., to take on Austin Peay of the Ohio Valley Conference Saturday at 10 a.m. Arizona time. You can follow the action with live links available at
