Grand Canyon finished its regular season with a 3-0 loss to visiting Utah Valley on Senior Day at Antelope Gymnasium Saturday.
The Antelopes are 17-11 overall and finish Western Athletic Conference play 6-8. Utah Valley is 14-17 and 8-6.
"It's disappointing," said coach Kris Naber of Saturday's loss. "We played too much as individuals rather than as the team that has been developing the last month. When we've played as a team, we've had some great accomplishments this season."
GCU honored seniors
Shannon Dugan,
Hayleigh Friemoth and
Mackenzie Phelps prior to the match. Though ineligible for the WAC tournament, Grand Canyon is hosting a two-day event next weekend with other transitioning and independent schools. Incarnate Word, NJIT, Omaha and UMass Lowell will be in Phoenix Nov. 21-22. GCU will have five matches each day at Antelope Gym.
"We look how far we've come this season with the wins we've accomplished and the challenges we've overcome," added Naber. "We're building a foundation of high expectations and these young kids are the future of our program."
On Saturday, Dugan led in kills with 14, while freshman
Natalie Tardy added nine. Sophomore
Megan Byrnes had six kills. Sophomore setter
Michelle Steagall had 21 assists and 15 digs. Freshman middle
Hannah Hicks had five block assists. Dugan added three block assists. Phelps had eight digs, while Dugan and Friemoth each had two service aces.
"Last year, we only beat two conference teams, this year' we've beaten all but two," added Naber, noting the team's significant improving from last season. "We have a lot of positives going forward."
GCU was 12-19 last year and 4-12 in the WAC.
Tournament action begins Friday at 9 a.m. with Omaha taking on NJIT. GCU's first match is an 11:30 a.m. contest with UMass Lowell, a team it beat earlier this season, 3-0, at the Chicago State Tournament.
