Grand Canyon surpassed its win total from its initial Division I season in 2013 by grabbing win No. 13 Thursday in a 3-1 (15-25, 25-12, 25-13, 25-1) Western Athletic Conference victory over Texas-Pan American at Antelope Gymnasium.
The Antelopes (13-9, 3-6), who finished 12-19 last season, had a season-high 12 service aces, including a career-best five from
Hannah Hankins to come back from a rough first set. The Lopes had only two service errors. The 12 aces were the most since the team tallied 13 against Hawai'i Pacific on Oct. 21, 2008. Hankins' five were the most since Megan Toth had six in a victory over Dominican on Oct. 1, 2010.
Shannon Dugan had a GCU season-best 23.5 points with 21 kills, three block assists and a service ace. It was her fourth 20-plus kill match, but her first one where she hit over .300 (21-7-46, .304). She also had 12 digs, recording her team-best 11th double-double of the year.
"She played patiently and intelligently with her swings," said coach Kris Naber. "Her hard work at practice really showed tonight."
The Antelopes lost 3-2 to the Broncs (5-17, 2-6) in Edinburg, Tex., and got off to a rough start Thursday when the visitors had 19 first-set kills and hit .472. The Antelopes defense helped hold UTPA to only 23 kills in the remaining three sets and aided in forcing 20 attack errors.
"It's really exciting, as a program, to see our youth gain experience and see us progressing," added Naber. "It's great to get (win No. 13) and we have a lot of matches left to play. It's especially nice to have most of them at home."
Frosh
Natalie Tardy added a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs. She added five block assists, too. Senior libero
Mackenzie Phelps had a match-best 24 digs. Frosh middle blocker
Hannah Hicks led with six block assists. Setter
Michelle Steagall had 39 assists, six digs and four kills.
Steagall, Tardy and Phelps each had two service aces.
The Antelopes play eight of their final nine matches at home, including Saturday's "Dig Pink" Breast Cancer Awareness match against defending WAC champion New Mexico State. The team will wear pink uniforms. T-shirts will be sold in the lobby to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation. The match is slated for a 1 p.m. start at Antelope Gymnasium.
