Grand Canyon came away with a strong performance, but not quite enough for the victory in a 3-1 (25-23, 20-25, 25-21, 25-22) loss to host Utah Valley in Orem, Utah Thursday.
GCU dropped to 12-8 on the season and 2-5 in the Western Athletic Conference. Utah Valley is 9-12 and 4-2 in the WAC.
"We competed well tonight and did some things that showed we are making a lot of strides, not just from the beginning of the season, but in the last three days of practice," said coach Kris Naber. "We've got 10 new players and they're buying into what we're wanting to do and helping create a great culture that we will build our future on."
Freshman
Natalie Tardy had a match-best 17 kills. She has led or tied for the team lead in kills 10 times. Senior
Hayleigh Friemoth added a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore setter
Michelle Steagall had 43 assists and nine digs. Senior libero
Mackenzie Phelps had 27 digs and upped her school career-record total to 2,274. She also had a pair of service aces. GCU had eight services aces, including three by sophomore
Hannah Hankins, while Utah Valley had only one.
"When you look at the fourth set, we had 11 hitting errors to their four and we lost by three points," added Naber. "It tells me we have what it takes to be successful. We have to capitalize on our opportunities to create points instead of forcing things to happen."
There were 17 ties and 11 lead changes in the first set alone. For the match, the teams were deadlocked 26 times with 14 lead changes.
Freshman
Hannah Hicks had a team-best four block assists. Friemoth added three. Sophomore
Megan Byrnes had eight kills and added a pair of block assists. Steagall and frosh defensive specialist
Emily Vitel had nine digs each.
