Grand Canyon (14-6, 3-4) improved to 7-0 at GCU Arena, including 3-0 in the Western Athletic Conference games with an 84-53 victory over Chicago State (3-18, 0-8) Thursday.
It was GCU's fifth double-digit win on its home floor and fourth win of 27 points or more in front of the 'Lope-friendly fans.
"We had a great crowd tonight," said GCU coach Trent May. "That's one of the things about being home and we had a great atmosphere to go with it tonight.
"When we're at home, we have a 'been-there-done-that' mentality. We know we can win at home and have comfort in that."
The Antelopes were led by the veteran crew of
Kaitlyn Petersen,
Deanna Daniels and
Johnna Brown. Petersen recorded her third double-double of the season and second straight at home. She had 22 points and 10 assists to go with four steals and three rebounds. She was 7-for-7 at the free-throw line. Daniels had 18 points on 8-for-12 shooting from the field and added a game-high five steals. Brown had 13 points and nine rebounds, including four offensive boards.
"They understand every game is big and they always meet the challenge," said May of his trio. "They're competitors and winners and are always ready to step up to any challenge.
GCU trailed by as much as seven in the first half, 20-13, but the Antelopes followed with a 13-1 run and ended the half on a 3-pointer at the buzzer by
Jenna Pearson to take a seven-point lead, 33-26. Petersen had 13 in the first half, including 3-for-4 from 3-point range.
GCU shot 56.3 percent in the second half, outscoring the Cougars 51-27 in the final 20 minutes. The Antelopes, who gave up 10 points on first-half turnovers, had just four second-half miscues.
Freshman
Tori Morris came off the bench and, in just six minutes of play, had a career-best five points.
GCU welcomes Kansas City to GCU Arena for a 2 p.m. contest Saturday.
