Grand Canyon University head baseball coach Andy Stankiewicz has been selected as a member of the coaching staff for the USA Baseball 2013 17U National Team Development Program, to be held from Aug. 11-17 at the National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.
This marks the second time that Stankiewicz has assisted at the National Training Complex, as he served as an assistant coach with the 2012 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team last summer. Stankiewicz also recently traveled to Cary after leading his 2013 GCU squad to the NCAA Division II Baseball Championships in May, where the Antelopes tied for fifth.
"I'm excited to head back to Cary, it will be the third time for me," said Stankiewicz. "I will have a chance to look at some young high school players and help them develop their game and help make the decision as to who will represent the United States for the National High School Team. USA Baseball is well-organized, and the people running it are passionate about developing great teams in different age groups. To be able to coach the collegiate team one year and go back to coach the high schoolers is a great honor for any coach. I'm very excited to go back and spend a week in Cary."
According to USA Baseball, players will participate in skill development sessions, various off-field educational sessions with guest speakers and instructors and intrasquad Red vs. Blue games as part of the National Team Development Program. The NTDP will also be used to connect various athletes with USA Baseball staff to prepare for a future USA Baseball National Team experience. Two players from the 2013 17U NTDP will be invited to the 2014 18U National Team Trials and eight players will be invited to the 2014 USA Baseball Tournament of Stars.
