Four are members of championship teams
Several Grand Canyon University baseball players participated in various summer baseball leagues around the country over the past couple of months, with many garnering accolades and helping their teams to league titles.
Among the highlights for GCU players include:
Pitchers Andrew Naderer and Jorge Perez tossed a combined 17.1 innings and allowed just 1 run en route to helping the Corvallis Knights win the West Coast League title. Perez clinched the championship with a 2-hit shutout and was named WCL Player of the Week for his efforts. Perez went 2-0 in the WCL playoffs and posted a 1.17 ERA while walking 1 and striking out 11. Both Naderer and Perez were named to the All-West Coast League team.
Perez spent a majority of the summer season in the closer role, recording six saves in 11 games and posting a 1.30 ERA. Naderer appeared in nine games (six starts) during the season, posting a 3-1 record.
Infielder Charles Wagner was named to the Horizon Air Summer Series All-Series 2013 Baseball Second Team after posting a .328 batting average (43-for-131) with 23 runs scored, 5 doubles, and 13 RBI for the Marysville Gold Sox.
Outfielder Brian Kraft was a New York Collegiate Baseball League All-Star after posting a .322 average (46-for-143) with 25 runs scored, 14 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs, and 26 RBI for the Oneonta Outlaws. Kraft was also selected to the NYCBL Home Run Derby as part of the All-Star festivities. The Outlaws, for whom pitcher Malcolm Purdy also played for, won the NYCBL championship. Purdy saw action in eight games for Oneonta.
"We are extremely proud of all our players that went out this summer," said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. "It is not easy to play a full spring season and then go back out and play another 50 games during the summer. It speaks to their commitment to development and wanting to represent GCU baseball. We believe that a huge part of development is being a part of winning teams, so congratulations to Jorge, Andrew, Brian, and Malcolm for winning the championship in their respective summer leagues."
GCU is coming off arguably its best season in Division II, as the Antelopes posted an impressive 40-19 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship in Cary, N.C., where GCU tied for fifth overall. The 'Lopes will compete in the Division I Western Athletic Conference in 2014.
