Starter
Andrew Naderer allowed just 1 run on 5 hits and 3 walks with 7 strikeouts over 9.0 innings of work, but was charged with his third loss as GCU was shutout for just the second time this season. Naderer’s counterpart, Brannon Easterling, tossed his NCAA-leading 14
th complete game of the season and fourth shutout, allowing just 6 hits with a walk and 7 strikeouts.
Michael Pomeroy and
Brandon Smith led the way offensively with two hits apiece, while
Brian Kraft and
Steven Swingle each had one.
Neither pitcher allowed a runner past second base through the first three innings. The Hilltoppers placed the first runner at third in the fourth inning with two outs on the board and after the next batter walked, St. Edward’s scored the first and only run of the game on a double steal.
The Hilltoppers threatened in the next frame, putting runners on second and third with two outs before Naderer struck out Cutter Runte on a 2-2 pitch to end the inning.
In the sixth, Pomeroy opened the frame with a single to left field. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Derek Mendoza and came around third base looking to score on a Swingle single to right field, but was ruled out at home for the third out.
Naderer made a stellar defensive play in the top of the seventh to avoid a two-out base runner. He scooped up a bunt down the third base line and threw a perfect strike to first to send the ‘Lopes back into the dugout.
Naderer retired five of his last seven batters, while Easterling set down six of his final seven to end the game.
