Antelopes Drop 5-Setter To Saint Francis

Grand Canyon fell 3-2 to Saint Francis (PA) in a non-conference men’s volleyball match at Antelope Gymnasium Friday.
GCU (14-13) lost by set scores of 25-14, 17-25, 24-26, 25-20, 15-11. The teams meet again 6 p.m. Saturday at Antelope Gymnasium.
Ben Ponnet had a team-best 17 kills, a .353 attack percentage and 10 digs.
“Ben had a really good offensive night tonight,” said coach Jeremy Price.
Jordon Tarantino had 16 kills and five service aces. Libero Trent Bruns had a team-high 12 digs. Ryan Mather had seven block assists, seven kills and a pair of aces. Setter Keith Smith had 46 assists.
Saint Francis had more kills (54-52), blocks (16.5-9.0) and a better hitting percentage (.262-.190). GCU had more service aces (8-6) and digs (41-35).
“At times we served well, but we didn’t in the fourth and fifth set,” added Price. “We didn’t keep the pressure on in the last two sets.
“We knew Saint Francis had a good team. They took Lewis to five, beat George Mason and won at IPFW. We’ll have to get off to a better start Saturday.”
