Grand Canyon’s most successful men’s volleyball season came to an end at the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association semifinals in Romeoville, Ill., Wednesday.
GCU (17-15) lost 3-0 to the No. 9 Lewis Flyers by set scores of 25-18, 25-23, 25-22.
Senior Jordon Tarantino was GCU’s bright spot statistically with 16 kills and five digs. Off the bench, Gerrard Lipscombe added four kills and 11 digs. Senior libero Trent Bruns had seven digs.
The Antelopes wrap up 2013 with the program’s first plus-.500 season, first win in the MIVA tournament, first win over a nationally-ranked program and first win over Ohio State; the last three all accomplished in last week’s 3-2 win over No. 11 Ohio State in the MIVA quarterfinals.
Against Lewis, the Antelopes struggled early, but rallied in the second set. Down 16-10, GCU tied the set 21-21 on a Tarantino kill, but were unable to get over the hump. In the third, GCU kept it close most of the way and led 14-13 on a Lewis attack error.
"We had our chances," said Jeremy Price. "As frustrating as it was to lose the second and third sets, I'm really proud of our effort tonight and the whole season. We came up short against a very good team.
"Jordon Tarantino and Trent Bruns both had nice matches to end their careers."
Lewis will host No. 12 Loyola-Chicago for the MIVA Championship Saturday.
