Grand Canyon finished the home portion of its season with a Pacific West Conference doubleheader sweep of Academy of Art on Senior Day at Stapleton-Pierson Field Saturday.
GCU (36-12, 19-5) won the opener 9-1, in six innings, and scored late to take a 7-6 win in game two.
The Antelopes are one-game out of first place in the PacWest, trailing Hawai’i Hilo (35-15, 21-5). GCU plays its final eight PacWest games on the road, beginning with a four-game series at Azusa Pacific April 26-27.
Stephanie Pesqueira picked up both wins Saturday to improve to 18-7. She earned a complete game win in the opener and pitched two innings of relief in the second game to pick up the victory. She helped her own cause in both games. In the opener, she went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored. Pitching-wise, she went six innings, struck out three and gave up only six hits.
Tied 6-6 in the sixth inning of the second game, Pesqueira started the game-winning rally with a two-out walk. Lone senior
Vanessa Ramirez, honored prior to the first pitch of the opener, followed with a single.
Nicole Newbury added an infield hit to load the bases and
Stephanie Smith, who had dazzled throughout the day with her fielding at third base, drove in the game-winner with a single to left field.
“I’m really happy with our offense today,” said GCU coach Ann Pierson. “We had great battles at the plate, great swings and great approaches. We made adjustments when they made pitching changes and I was really pleased how we did the little things.”
In the opener,
Lauren Regester went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. She had a solo home run, her third of the season. Newbury and Smith each had two hits.
In game two,
Kayla Henry had three hits and two stolen bases, upping her season total to 26 thefts. Newbury had three hits, while Smith and
Claire Zampini each had two.
“Our defense was solid and Steph (Smith) really made some great plays (at third base),” added Pierson. “Pesky did a good job of slowing down their offense after they scored (four runs in the fifth).
“I thought it was a great way for Vanessa to have her last at bat at home (helping us get the sweep).”
