The No. 8 Grand Canyon University baseball team dropped a doubleheader against Dixie State today, losing 3-1 and 4-3 at Bruce Hurst Field in St George, Utah. GCU has now lost their last four straight, after winning the previous 20 in a row.
The Antelopes fell to 29-9, 22-4 in the Pacific West Conference. The Red Storm improved to 26-9, 18-8 in the conference. The second game of the today’s doubleheader and tomorrow’s game are scheduled as non-conference games.
“It’s a game of momentum and we just haven’t been able to hang on to it,” said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. “We will regain it and score a run here or there, but we are not doing a good job of maintaining it. This is a bit of a gut check for our guys, but take nothing away from Dixie State, they are a good club. We have gotten away from our style. We are not pitching to contact and are walking too many guys. We are chasing out of the zone offensively and the guys are not controlling their at bats.”
Grand Canyon took a 1-0 lead in the opener with a run in the fourth. Harlyn Griffiths led off the inning with a single and would move to second on a sacrifice by Michael Pomeroy. Steven Swingle’s RBI single to left would later score Griffiths.
Coley Bruns (7-1), who lost for the first time this season, held the Red Storm to one hit and no runs through the first four innings. Dixie State’s Ty Johnson would lead off the fifth with a walk and would score on squeeze bunt by Jordan Hanley. A RBI single by Colton Yack and RBI double by Kevin Kline gave the Red Storm a 3-1 lead after five innings.
GCU’s
Brian Kraft led off the sixth with a walk, but was unable to score. The Antelopes threatened in the seventh when Swingle opened the inning with a single, his third hit of the game. He would then pick up his first stolen base of the season to move to second and moved to third on a groundout by
Chris Lindmark.
Charles Wagner drew a one-out walk to put runners on the corners, but the ‘Lopes were unable to score after strikeout and groundout ended the affair.
Garrett Jeffries made his first ever appearance on the mound and retired the only batter he faced on a pop out with the bases loaded.
Kevin Behnke pitched 1.1 scoreless innings.
Bruns lasted 4.1 innings, allowing three runs (all earned) on four hits. He issued five walks (one intentional).
In the nightcap, as was the case in the opener, GCU took a 1-0 lead. This time it came in the first as Griffiths and Pomeroy recorded back-to-back doubles in the opening frame.
The Red Storm wasted no time in the bottom of the inning, plating three runs on a home run by Kline.
Kraft ripped a 2-run double to left center to knot the game at 3-all in the second inning.
Kline put the Red Storm in front with his second home run of the game, a solo shot in the third.
Wagner walked to open the GCU seventh, but the Antelopes were unable to move him around.
Andrew Naderer (6-2) made the start and took the loss, allowing four runs (all earned) on five hits. He walked three and struck out one.
The Antelopes received 3.2 innings of scoreless relief from their bullpen of
Kyle Detwiler,
Brandon Bonilla and Behnke.
“The relievers have been giving us a chance,” added Stankiewicz. “I can’t say enough about the job they have done in this series. Bonilla, Detwiler and Benhke were outstanding in game two for us.”
Grand Canyon will wrap up this four-game set with Dixie State with a single game tomorrow at 10 a.m. (Arizona time). The game can be heard live by going to
