Grand Canyon got a six-hit shutout from junior pitcher
Kiki Sepulveda and a game-winning RBI-single from
Claire Zampini – for the second straight day – to complete a doubleheader sweep and 3-1 Pacific West Conference series win over California Baptist at Stapleton-Pierson Field Saturday.
Zampini, who ended Friday’s second game of a doubleheader with an eighth-inning walk-off RBI-single did it again Saturday, knocking in
Stephanie Smith – the same runner that scored the game-winner Friday – with a seventh-inning single to center field to give the Antelopes a 3-2 win.
In game two, Sepulveda not only scattered six hits, she hit a two-run triple in a three-run second inning to get the ‘Lopes off to a good start on their way to a 4-0 win.
GCU, ranked No. 18 in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll, improved to 27-10 overall and 15-5 in the PacWest. Cal Baptist is 19-16 and 11-13.
GCU is tied for first place in the PacWest with Dixie State (26-11, 16-6) and one-half game ahead of Hawai’i-Hilo (23-14, 14-5), after the Vulcans lost game one of their doubleheader Saturday at Notre Dame de Namur.
"I'm really excited for the kids," said GCU coach Ann Pierson, on Saturday's sweep. "They came out with more fire and a better competitive approach. Cal Baptist is a good team, solid all over the place and their young pitching is growing up."
Trailing 1-0 in Saturday’s first game, Grand Canyon scored a pair of runs in the fifth.
Nicole Newbury reached on a one-out walked and moved to third on a single to left from Smith, who advanced to second on the throw to third.
