Claire Zampini’s single up the middle in the eighth inning scored
Stephanie Smith with the winning run to give Grand Canyon a 2-1 victory and doubleheader split with California Baptist at Stapleton-Pierson Field Friday.
The Antelopes dropped the opener 5-4. The teams finish the four-game series Saturday with a noon doubleheader. GCU is ranked No. 18 in the nation and will take a 25-10 overall mark and 13-5 PacWest record into Saturday’s games. Cal Baptist is 19-14 and 11-11.
“We have to come out and be more consistently focused and aggressive,” said GCU coach Ann Pierson. “We know Cal Baptist is a very good team on both sides of the ball, so we have to be more responsible with our opportunities on offense.”
The Antelopes pulled out the second game, but left 11 runners on base, including the bases loaded in the second, sixth and seventh innings.
Smith singled through the left side to with one out in the eighth. She moved to second when
Haley Walker reached on an error. A bunt single by
Kayla Henry loaded the bases prior to Zampini’s game-winner.
On defense, the Antelopes helped their pitching staff by turning three double plays, including a 5-2-3 twin-killing to end the sixth.
Stephanie Pesqueira was the pitcher of record in both games. She won in relief in game two and suffered the loss in the opener.
In game one, Cal Baptist took advantage of a pair of second-inning errors to score twice. GCU tied it on a two-run third inning single from
Kailey Regester. In the fifth, the Lancers’ Marshean August hit a three-run homer. GCU cut it to one with a two-run homer from
Kelsey Barak in the fifth.
Henry went 5-for-9 on the day. Smith was 4-for-7.
