Garrett Jeffries’ two-out, two-run double in the ninth inning gave No. 23 Grand Canyon a 7-6 come-from-behind win over Cal Poly Pomona at Brazell Stadium Tuesday, extending the club’s winning streak to 13 games and improving the overall record to 22-5.
The streak is the longest for the Antelopes since winning 17 consecutive games from March 2-24, 1986.
“He’s one of our more consistent offensive players, a line drive and gap guy,” said GCU coach Andy Stankiewicz. “They left a ball up in the zone and he drove it over the right fielder’s head. I’m glad he was rewarded for taking a nice approach at the plate.”
GCU has won nine of the last 10 at Brazell Stadium and welcome Holy Names for a four-game – two doubleheaders -- Pacific West Conference series Friday (2 p.m.) and Saturday (12 p.m.).
“Our guys are gaining confidence,” Stankiewicz added. “They feel like they’re always in the game until the end.”
The Antelopes led 4-1 after three innings, but a four-run Pomona sixth gave the Broncos a 6-4 advantage. GCU scored one in the eighth.
Michael Pomeroy, who had a two-run single in the first, had a two-out infield single. He moved to second on a wild pitch and later scored on a throwing error by Pomona shortstop Trevor Magno.
In the ninth,
Brandon Smith led off with a pinch-hit single. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by pinch-hitter
Ryan Moore. With two out,
Derek Mendoza was hit by a pitch prior to Jeffries game-winning hit.
“We were good early and we were good late, but not so good in the middle,” Stankiewicz. “We’ll work on that, but I couldn’t be more proud of our guys.”
Cal Poly left 14 runners on base. Late in the game relievers
Hunter Herdt and
Mark Jarrett each got out of jams. Jarrett earned the win to improve to 2-0.
