Grand Canyon University head women's soccer coach Stevie Gill has announced that Mexican National Team player and U-17 World Cup star Jessica Valadez has joined the GCU women’s soccer program for the 2013 season. Valadez joins the Antelopes for their inaugural campaign in the Division I Western Athletic Conference (WAC).
Valadez represented Mexico in last year’s U-17 Women’s World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan as a central defender. She played every minute of the tournament against teams such as Brazil, New Zealand and Japan. Valadez also played in all the World Cup Qualifiers against Canada, United States, Panama, Bahamas and Trinidad and Tobago and in the “Feria de las Flores” tournament in Colombia. Valadez comes to GCU from Camarillo, Calif., and plays her club soccer with the ECNL Eagles Soccer Club of Southern California.
“We are extremely happy that Jessica Valadez has joined the GCU family here in sunny Phoenix,” said Gill. “Jessica is a class kid with a fantastic soccer background and will certainly help us solidify our backline and add great value as a person within our program. Representing Mexico and being able to play with and against many of the top players within her age is a great accomplishment. She is also a distinguished student with numerous scholar-athlete awards and plans to study Physical Therapy. I can’t wait until Jessica puts on her boots and competes for us this fall.”
“This serves as a positive reminder that Grand Canyon University and Phoenix, Ariz. are perfect destinations where top athletes and students can compete at the highest level while being afforded a great education,” Gill added.
