Grand Canyon, ranked No. 23 in the nation by
Collegiate Baseball and second in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association West Region poll, won its 12th straight and eighth of last nine at Brazell Stadium with a 3-2 victory over Cal Poly Pomona Monday.
Steven Swingle had a pair of hits, including a double, and scored the game’s first run.
Derek Mendoza hit a solo home run to give the Antelopes a 3-1 lead in the sixth.
“(Cal Poly) can really hit and it’s tough to compete against them with just a one-run lead,” said GCU coach Andy Stankiewicz. “(Derek’s home run) gave us a cushion and proved to be the difference.”
The Broncos rallied to cut it to 3-2, but Grand Canyon (21-5) reliever
Kevin Behnke got out of a bases loaded, one-out, sixth-inning jam with a strikeout and ground out. He got of trouble in the eighth leaving two Pomona runners stranded.
Mark Jarrett got the side in order in the ninth to earn his sixth save of the season.
Malcolm Purdy got the win to up his record to 2-0.
Kyle Detwiler got the start and threw four solid innings, giving up just two hits and striking out three. Behnke had three strikeouts in one and two-thirds innings.
“Kyle Detwiler was terrific,” said Stankiewicz. “Getting a spot start, as a freshman, he threw strikes and gave us some momentum.”
The Antelopes took a 1-0 lead in the second. Swingle doubled and scored on a two-out single by
Brandon Smith. The lead grew to 2-0 in the fifth; again a timely two-out hit scored the run.
Paul Panaccione singled, was balked to second and sacrificed to third. With two down, Seth Fretheim singled to left field to score Panaccione.
Fretheim also had a two-hit game. Cal Poly left 10 runners on base.
The teams meet again Tuesday to complete the two-game series with a noon start time at Brazell Stadium.
