The Grand Canyon University baseball team defeated visiting Academy of Art, 16-1, today to complete a four-game sweep of the Urban Knights in their Pacific West Conference opening series. The Antelopes are now 9-5 overall and 4-0 in the conference, while Academy of Art fell to 1-10 overall and 0-4 in conference play.
The 16 runs marked the most for the ‘Lopes since scoring 20 runs in the first game of a doubleheader at Academy of Art on April 20, 2012. GCU also collected a season-high 16 hits.
“In the game of baseball, you can’t be greedy and give away at-bats,” said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. “As a pitcher, you have to keep pounding the zone and not get complacent. Our guys did a nice job of staying on it today even after we got up big.”
Starter
Trent Wilson picked up his first win of the season after tossing 5.0 scoreless frames, allowing juts 2 hits and 2 walks with 6 strikeouts. For the Urban Knights, Nicholas Boyett suffered his second loss.
“All of our starters have done a nice job,” said Stankiewicz. “That’s what we need in conference play - four starters that can give us quality innings. I’m proud of the way the guys have come out so far and feel good about their jobs in the first week of conference. We can only enjoy it for a little bit because we have to turn right around and do it again next week, but our starters really did a nice job this weekend.”
Seth Fretheim led the way offensively for the ‘Lopes after going 4-for-5 with 3 runs and 3 RBI.
Derek Mendoza also plated 3 runs, while he was one of four GCU players to collect two hits in the game.
GCU got going offensively right from the start, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the first inning via four hits and three errors in the field.
Nick Chapman reached base after being hit by a pitch to lead off inning and scored on an RBI double from Fretheim. Fretheim advanced to third on a single from
Michael Pomeroy and scored on a pitcher’s errant throw to third base. Pomeroy moved to second on the play, took third on Mendoza’s single and scored on an RBI single from
Garrett Jeffries.
Harlyn Griffiths then drew a walk to load the bases and after the second out was recorded an infield fly,
Paul Panaccione collected an RBI with a fielder’s choice. Back at the top of the order, Chapman reached on an error by the shortstop and advanced to second on a throwing error by the same player, as Jeffries and Griffiths came home on the play. Fretheim drew the second walk of the inning to once again load the bases and a fielder’s choice to the third baseman allowed Panaccione to score the seventh run of the inning.
The ‘Lopes added eight more runs from the third-fifth innings, adding two in the third and three in both the fourth and fifth frames. During that time, GCU collected 10 hits, three of which came off the bat of Fretheim.
The Urban Knights got on the board in the seventh inning after a two-out walk scored on back-to-back singles. GCU added a final run in the eighth inning when
Ryan Tomita drew a lead off walk and came around to score three batters later.
The ‘Lopes will wrap up their season-opening home stand when they host Point Loma for a four-game series beginning on Thursday, March 7 at 7 p.m. at Brazell Stadium. Fans can follow the action via live stats by visiting

“I know that Point Loma has had success, and they like to run, so we will have to control the running game,” Stankiewicz added. “They have the speed, and that always poses a problem. But we will be able to work on it this week and get ready for them.”
