The Grand Canyon University baseball team moved into seventh place in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association West Region Poll, as released today. The Antelopes were eighth last week and are coming off a four-game sweep of Hawai’i Hilo on the road.
GCU is 16-5 overall and 11-1 in Pacific West Conference play to currently sit atop the conference standings. The ‘Lopes have won seven straight games and 11 of their last 12 contests.
The ‘Lopes are led offensively by third baseman
Derek Mendoza, who owns a .432 batting average (32-for-74) with five doubles, three triples, and a team-high 24 RBI. Designated hitter
Garrett Jeffries is also batting over .400 (.404, 23-for-57).
On the pitching staff,
Coley Bruns is a perfect 4-0 on the season with a 1.53 ERA (5 ER in 29.1 IP).
Andrew Naderer, who is 4-1, leads the team with 33 strikeouts.
GCU will next be in action when they face Hawai’i Pacific for a pair of doubleheaders beginning on Wednesday at 7 p.m. (Arizona time). HPU is the fourth-ranked team in the West Region.
