Kelsey Barak’s extra-inning home run gave No. 7 Grand Canyon (21-6, 9-1) a 3-2 win in eight innings and a Pacific West Conference doubleheader sweep of Chaminade (6-12, 2-6) in Waipio, Hawai’i Saturday.
“We knew going in Chaminade was a good, scrappy team,” said GCU coach Ann Pierson. “Our defense was outstanding and our pitching was good enough. We were fortunate to get a couple on the board and hold them off.”
It was Barak’s second home run of the day and third of the season. In game one, another 3-2 win, Barak homered to give GCU a 2-0 lead in the third inning.
Lauren Regester had three hits, two doubles and a pair of RBIs and winning pitcher
Stephanie Pesqueira got out of a fifth-inning jam to improve to 9-3 on the season.
In the game one win, Pesqueira fanned six and gave up six hits without a walk. GCU took a 1-0 lead in the first when Barak walked and scored on the first of two Regester doubles. In the fifth,
Kayla Henry extended her on-base streak to 26 games with a leadoff single. She stole second and scored on a Regester single.
Chaminade scored two runs in the fifth to tie game two, 2-2. To start the eighth, Barak led off and quickly gave GCU a 3-2 advantage.
Kiki Sepulveda improved to 8-1 with the win. She gave up seven hits, three walks and struck out two. The GCU defense was error-free and Chaminade left seven runners on base.
Henry extended her on-base streak to 27, going 3-for-4 with an RBI, run scored and stolen base. Barak had a pair of hits and two RBIs to go with one run scored.
The teams meet again Sunday to wrap up the four-game set with a 3 p.m. doubleheader. Links to live coverage of the games will be available at

“There are no days off in our conference,” added Pierson. “We know we have to battle every day.”
