No. 7 Grand Canyon split its doubleheader at Chaminade Sunday, winning game 1 in five innings, 8-0, and losing game 2, 6-5, at Corp Field in Waipio, Hawai’i.
GCU (22-7, 10-2) won the four-game series, 3-1, and is 4-2 on its Hawai’i road trip. The Antelopes will play two games at Hawai’i Pacific Tuesday and finish up the trip with a doubleheader Wednesday at BYU-Hawai’i.
“Our approach today was good and we made adjustments when we had to, we just made a few careless mistakes (in game 2) and missed some spots on the mound,” said GCU coach Ann Pierson. “We’ll have to be on (the rest of the week). Our pitching needs to be good and our defense has to be solid.”
The Antelopes scored eight times on 11 hits in the opener, finishing the game early with a four-run fifth inning. GCU got off to a good start with three in the first and one more in the second.
Kayla Henry went 3-for-3 and scored twice.
Kailey Regester went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and helped end the game early with a two-run home run in the fifth.
Claire Zampini also had a pair of hits and two RBIs.
Stephanie Pesqueira and
Danielle Legee combined on a three-hitter.
In game two, Chaminade erased GCU’s 3-0 lead with a five-run fourth inning. The Antelopes tied it 5-5 with two in the sixth, but left two runners on. GCU left the bases loaded in the first.
The Antelopes had 15 hits in the loss. Both Zampini and
Kelsey Barak went 4-for-4. Henry extended her on-base streak to 29 games. Pesqueira got the decision in both games and is 10-4 on the season.
