The Grand Canyon University baseball team won the series opener at Hawai’i Hilo, 8-5, tonight at Wong Stadium in Hilo, HI. With the win, the Antelopes improved to 13-5 overall and 8-1 in the Pacific West Conference, while the Vulcans fell to 5-18-1 overall and 5-12-1 in conference play.
The win was the fourth straight for the ‘Lopes.
Starter
Jorge Perez allowed 5 runs (2 earned) on 9 hits with 2 strikeouts over 4.0 innings.
Malcolm Purdy was credited with his first win of the season after tossing a scoreless inning in relief of Perez.
Mark Jarrett relieved
Brandon Bonilla, who tossed 2.2 scoreless innings of relief, with two outs in the eighth inning and converted his third save of the season.
Derek Mendoza had a nice night at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and team-high 3 RBI.
Michael Pomeroy and
Kyle Raidy each collected two hits in the game.
GCU scored first when Raidy opened the third inning with a double and advanced to third base on an error by the left fielder. He crossed home plate on a fielder’s choice bunt from
Seth Fretheim one out later. Fretheim came around to score on an RBI triple off the bat of Pomeroy, who scored the third run of the frame on a Mendoza RBI double.
The ‘Lopes tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth inning when Mendoza collected his second and third RBIs of the night with a two out, bases-loaded single to make the score 5-0.
The Vulcans responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame on back-to-back one out singles following a leadoff double and hit batter. Hilo knotted the score at five when they added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
GCU broke the tie in the next frame when they scored two on two hits by Fretheim and
Brandon Smith. The ‘Lopes made it a three-run game when they
Steven Swingle scored on an RBI single from
Garrett Jeffries after connecting for a two out double in the eighth.
