Grand Canyon won the first of its two-match non-conference series with University of Pacific 3-2 at Alex G. Spanos Center in Stockton, Calif., Friday.
It was GCU’s first-ever road win against a team from the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, the top conference in NCAA Men’s Volleyball.
Grand Canyon (13-9) won by set scores of 18-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-23, 15-9. Pacific was nationally-ranked, No. 15, last week.
“We had a lot of guys contribute at various times and that’s what I’m most proud of,” said coach Jeremy Price. “Ben Hunt was outstanding.”
Junior outside hitter Hunt had the biggest night of his career, getting a career-best 18 kills on 32 swings with only two errors, a .500 hitting percentage. Four Antelopes had double-digit kills. Outside hitter Ben Ponnet and middle blockers Ryan Mather and Christian Ward each had 10. Mather hit .471 on 17 attempts with just two errors. Ward hit .353 on 17 tries with four errors.
“Our middles did a nice job and (setter) Keith Smith did a good job putting them in position to be successful,” added Price. “Ben (Ponnet) got off to a slow start, but really showed the resilience of our team and performed very well late.”
Off the bench, Gerrard Lipscombe had seven kills, while Andrew Muys, also off the bench, and Jordon Tarantino each had five. Libero Trent Bruns had 18 digs. Smith had 57 assists and Ponnet contributed three service aces.
“We got great contributions off our bench,” added Price. “Gerrard had seven kills and it seemed everyone came at a huge moment in the match. On a night we didn’t get a lot of blocks, Trent was great on defense.
The Antelopes were out-hit by nearly 70 points (.275-.341) and out-blocked (4-17). GCU had more kills (68-62), service aces (6-3) and digs (50-46). In the fourth set, GCU had 19 kills and hit .351.
The teams meet again Saturday at 7 p.m. Fans can follow live stats and live video with links available at www.GCULopes.com.
"(Pacific is) a talented, veteran team and we expect them to give a great effort (Saturday)," added Price. "We'll have to be significantly better."
