The Grand Canyon University baseball team moved up to eighth in the latest National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association West Region poll. The Antelopes were 10
th in last week’s rankings.
GCU took three of four games from visiting Point Loma this past weekend, dropping the first game, 7-4, before outscoring the Sea Lions 25-2 over the next three contests. The ‘Lopes are 12-5 overall and 7-1 in Pacific West Conference play.
The ‘Lopes are led by senior
Derek Mendoza, who has started at third base in all 17 games and boasts a .417 batting average (25-for-60) with four doubles, two triples and a team-leading 20 RBI.
Garrett Jeffries has seen action in 15 games and is batting .395 (17-for-43).
Jorge Perez,
Andrew Naderer, and
Coley Bruns each have three wins under their belt, while Perez and Naderer lead the pitching staff with 27 strikeouts.
Mark Jarrett successfully converted his second save over the weekend, while
Brandon Bonilla extended his scoreless-outing streak to nine games.
GCU will hit the road for the first time this season for eight games in Hawai’i, beginning with a four-game set at Hawai’i Hilo slated to open on March 15 at 9 p.m. (Arizona time).
