Grand Canyon, ranked No. 11 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll and No. 6 in the Basford Rankings, finished the dual meet portion of its season with a 27-10 victory over California Baptist at Van Dyne Gym in Riverside, Calif., Saturday.
GCU ends the year 14-6 in duals.
Down 10-3, the Antelopes won the final six matches of the night to secure the victory.
Lino Estrada, at 133, started the streak with a 5-2 decision over Dakota Thayer. The margin was cut to 10-9 with
Mike Hamel’s 7-2 triumph over Bradford Gerl at 141.
All-American
Bobby Ward, ranked No. 8 at 149, gave GCU the lead for good, making quick work of Paul Miller, pinning the Lancer in 1:43.
Ryan Miller, at 157, and
Juan Carlos Maynes, at 165, each shut out their opponents and won by decision. Miller took a 3-0 victory over Alec Smith, while Maynes won 4-0 over Anthony Ballinger.
“We started a little slow but Hamel and Ward got us going,” said GCU coach R.C. LaHaye. “Hamel beat one of their best kids and Bobby sparked the momentum with a pin.”
The Antelopes finished off the stretch of wins with another fall. At 174,
Martin Fabbian defeated Kenneth Tribble in 5:46. GCU’s other win came at 184 – the opening match of the night.
Brett Sanchez defeated Paul Head 8-4.
The dual season has been up and down for us (this season),” added LaHaye. “It’s good to finish on top and I’m really proud of our guys. We’re looking forward to the post season.”
GCU will wrestle in the Super Region IV Championships Feb. 22-23 in Chadron, Neb.
