The Grand Canyon University baseball team dropped their season-opener tonight against visiting UC San Diego, 10-5, at Brazell Stadium. The Tritons, who carried a No. 19/No. 22 ranking (NCBWA/
Collegiate Baseball) into tonight’s contest, improved to 3-1 on the young season.
“San Diego is a good ball club,” said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. “This is a good test for us. But what hurt us was giving up three runs in the eighth and two in the ninth. You always want to win out of the shoot.”
The ‘Lopes were led offensively by
Michael Pomeroy, who went 2-for-4 on the night.
Derek Mendoza and
Steven Swingle combined for all of GCU’s runs.
Ryan Goodbrand picked up the win for UCSD, tossing 6.0 innings of shutout baseball. For the ‘Lopes,
Jorge Perez was charged with the loss after allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on two walks and three strikeouts over 5.0 innings of work.
GCU relievers also saw their fair share of action, as
Malcolm Purdy,
Brandon Bonilla,
Kyle Detwiler and
Cody Repenning worked on the mound tonight.
“I thought Jorge pitched okay,” said Stankiewicz. “He is going to get better as his pitch count moves up. Overall, tonight was a little frustrating. They run the bases well and we didn’t do a good job holding them on their bases. We knew it was going to be a good test, so hopefully tomorrow and Sunday we can give a better effort.”
Goodbrand carried a no-hitter into the sixth-inning, but saw that end when
Chris Lindmark singled with one out in the inning.
Mendoza opened the scoring for GCU with a 2-run single to left field in eighth inning, scoring
Paul Panaccione and Lindmark, who both led off the inning with walks. Following Mendoza, Swingle connected for a three-run homer on the first pitch he saw in the eighth inning to make it an 8-5 game with no outs.
“It was the middle of our lineup and that is how they have to be,” Stankiewicz added. “UCSD did a good job of shutting them down to that point. But that’s what those guys are supposed to do. With Pomeroy, Mendoza and Swingle, if we can get runners on with those guys at bat, we need them to drive runs in. Hopefully we get more comfortable and drive the ball. It would sure be nice to have more big innings like that eighth inning.”
However, the Tritons responded by tacking on two more runs in the ninth inning to secure the win.
The two teams will be back in action tomorrow for the second of three contests schedule this weekend. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
