The Grand Canyon University baseball team dropped an 8-7 contest tonight against UC San Diego at Brazell Stadium. The Tritons improved to 4-1 on the season, while the Antelopes fell to 0-2.
“There no moral victories in baseball,” said head coach Andy Stankiewicz. “It is frustrating because we just haven’t figured out how to finish off people yet. We have to get better at shutting the door. When you are playing a good ball club, they will take advantage of that and they have done it two nights in a row.”
Derek Mendoza had a strong night at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a run scored and 2 RBI, one of which pulled the ‘Lopes within one run in the bottom of the ninth.
Harlyn Griffiths accounted for 3 RBI after going 2-for-4 at the plate.
For the second straight night,
Steven Swingle connected for a home run, this time a leadoff four-bagger in the eighth inning.
Hunter Herdt was charged with the loss after allowing 3 runs on 3 hits over 2.1 innings of work. For the Tritons, Blake Fassler picked up the win, while Troy Cruz was credited with his first save of the season.
Andrew Naderer got his first career starting nod for GCU tonight, allowing just 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts over 5.1 innings.
“Andrew did a great job,” added Stankiewicz. “He has poise and is a good, competitive kid. He has the chance to be a pretty good one. That is a legitimate lineup over at UCSD and for him to do that against them is pretty good.”
GCU jumped on the board first with a run in the first inning via an RBI triple from Mendoza to score
Michael Pomeroy. The Tritons evened the score with a run in the third.
The ‘Lopes once again reclaimed the lead after Griffiths drove in Mendoza with a two-out RBI single. But UCSD once again responded with a run of their own to tie the score at two apiece in the top of sixth inning.
GCU then scored two runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning when Griffiths collected his second and third RBIs of the contest. After scoreless half-innings in the seventh, the Tritons came out swinging in the eighth, scoring six runs and forcing GCU to turn to four different relievers.
However, the ‘Lopes didn’t quit as they responded by scoring three runs over the next two innings, coming up just short in the ninth inning.
