GCU To Take Five To National Tournament
Grand Canyon moved up 10 spots to No. 9 in the final National Wrestling Coaches Association poll of the season, released today.
GCU will take five wrestlers to the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships next week in Birmingham, Ala. The Antelopes finished third in last week’s Super Region IV Championships and second in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships.
Three of the five qualifying wrestlers were also among those in the final individual poll. Defending 125-class national champion Kyle McCrite, runner-up in last week’s region, is No. 4. Bobby Ward, a 2012 All-American and third place finisher at the region tournament, is No. 8 at 149. Tyrell Fortune, named the RMAC Wrestler of the Year, won the 285 region/conference title and is No. 3 in his weight class.
Lino Estrada, a region runner-up at 133, and Mike Hamel, a fourth-place finisher at 141, will also wrestle in the national tournament.
