Grand Canyon juniors Mike Hamel (149) and Peter Anguiano (285) reached Friday's late round of consolation matches before being eliminated in the 32nd annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational.
Some of the top Division I programs in the nation were among the 33 teams participating in the event, which will conclude Saturday. With no GCU wrestler advancing to Saturday's championship round, the Antelopes' next match is a Dec. 13 dual at Embry-Riddle.
Hamel and Anguiano both lost in the first round Friday, but battled back with a pair of wins each to move on to the third round of consolations.
GCU finished with 10.5 points in the tournament. Oklahoma (84.5), Nebraska (75) and Michigan (72.5) hold the top three spots.
Hamel lost a tough 4-0 decision to top-seeded Kendrick Maple of Oklahoma, then bounced back with a pair of impressive wins, downing familiar-foe Dylan Furtado of San Francisco State 9-1 and Nick Stager, 13-0, of Harvard. He lost by fall to 10th-seeded Brandon Nelsen of Purdue in the evening match.
Anguiano started the day off with a 13-6 loss to Virginia Tech's third-seeded Ty Walz, but followed with two one-point wins. He defeated Hildev Manzur of San Francisco State, 3-2, and followed with a 4-3 triumph over Ryder Cavey of Brown. Fifth-seeded Ross Larson of Oklahoma knocked out Anguiano, by fall, in the Friday night consolation round.
Four other wrestlers, AJ Salazar (125), Lino Estrada (133), Austin Solari (141) and Martin Fabbian (174) won matches before being eliminated. Salazar won by sudden victory, 8-6, over Marc Collier of San Francisco State. Estrada won a 15-2 major decision over Alfredo Orozco of Western Wyoming College. Solari downed Brown's Zachary Tanenbaum, 6-1 and Fabbian defeated Kyle Foy of Western Wyoming by fall.
