Grand Canyon opened the first half slowly and that proved too much to recover from as the New Mexico Lobos defeated the Antelopes 80-68 in front of a crowd of 15,322 at The Pit in Albuquerque, N.M.
Assistant coach Mark Nelson's postgame interview with Michael Potter.
The loss dropped Canyon to its third-straight loss and a 5-6 record. The Lobos improved to 9-3.
The Lobos opened the first half on a 15-3 run over the first 4:20 and closed the half on an 8-0 run over the final 2:28 to take a 46-26 lead into the half. What those numbers don't show is that in the 12:48 between those two runs was a 23-23 stretch that showed the Antelopes could compete with New Mexico, a squad that returned four starters that a year ago went 29-6 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament as the No. 3 seed.
Grand Canyon started the second half fast scoring the first eight points on a bucket from
Jeff Lowery and three's from
Demetrius Walker and
Jerome Garrison.
New Mexico would open their largest lead of the game at 69-42, but from there the Antelopes would outscore them 26-11 the rest of the way over the final 9:31.
Daniel Alexander led GCU with a career best 18 points. He also had four rebounds and four assists. Walker scored seven points in his Albuquerque homecoming, while
Blake Davis added 13.
New Mexico carried a 33-25 edge on the boards and also a 30-22 advantage with Points in the Paint. The Lobos shot 52.1 percent for the game, compared to 43.1 for the 'Lopes. GCU was 15-for-30 in the second half. Grand Canyon committed 10 more fouls than the Lobos (23-13), which led to 18 more attempts from the line for the home team.
The game marked the third game this season that GCU has hit 10 three-pointers, tying a season high.
Grand Canyon will complete its five-game road skein with a trip to Chattanooga, Tenn. for the Dr. Pepper Classic hosted by Tennessee Chattanooga and also featuring Middle Tennessee State and Maine. GCU will open the Classic on Dec. 29 against the host Mocs at 5 p.m. (Arizona time). That game can be heard on
Faith 1360 AM in Phoenix.
