Grand Canyon (5-2) suffered a heart-breaking 62-60 loss to UCLA in a consolation round game of the Gulf Coast Showcase at Germain Arena in Estero, Fla., Saturday.
UCLA (3-3) guard Nirra Fields scored with 2.4 seconds remaining to decide the game.
Down 60-54 with 1:23 to go, GCU junior guard
Kaitlyn Petersen hit a jumper at the 1:04 mark and a pair of free throws with 55 seconds to go. Senior
Johnna Brown got a steal and later scored on a layup with 15 seconds left to tie the game.
"I like our fight," said GCU coach Trent May. "We don't back down or play doormat to anyone.
"The times we had lulls we gave them easy and direct points. When they had their lulls we had to work for everything we got. Nothing was easy."
The Antelopes led most of the game.
Judy Jones, who led all scorers with 22 points, gave GCU a 2-0 lead. The advantage grew to 12, 46-34, with 15 minutes left. UCLA took its first lead, 55-54, with 3:58 remaining. The Bruins extended the lead when GCU had a stretch of four turnovers in five possessions.
UCLA was ranked No. 25 in the nation earlier this season and owns a win over then-No. 10 Oklahoma. The Bruins were picked fifth in the Pac-12.
"Teams like UCLA, (with multiple All-Pac 12 players) are going to make big shots at the end of the game," added May. "(We made some mistakes and) every mistake is magnified against teams that can expose them."
Frosh guard
August Touchard, starting her second straight game, sparked the Antelopes in the first half with a pair of 3-pointers. She was 3-for-4 from 3-point range and finished with a career-best 11 points.
Jones had her third double-double in the last four games, adding 11 rebounds. She was 9-for-16 from the field. Brown had 12 points, five rebounds, three steals and one blocked shot. Petersen, Brown and
Deanna Daniels each had three assists.
"We have some gritty players and I like how we have a 'refuse to lose' attitude," said May.
The Antelopes will play SE Louisiana in the tournament's seventh-place game Sunday at 7:30 a.m. Arizona Time.
