Grand Canyon's win over Savannah State last night was its first in nearly 22 years over a Division I opponent. It took less than 24 hours to pick up the second after a 78-69 win over Lamar at the Jon M. Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
With the win GCU moved its record to .500 at 3-3. Lamar fell to 1-5.
"Our expectation was to come into this weekend and play well and to get two wins is big for our program," said head coach Dan Majerle. "We played really well in the first half and once again weathered a storm starting off the second half. We received contributions up and down our roster and I'm proud of the guys."
Grand Canyon received career-best scoring efforts from
Jerome Garrison and
Blake Davis, who had 22 and 15 respectively. Garrison had 19 last night in the win over Savannah State.
Garrison, with
Demetrius Walker out of the lineup the past two games, was moved back to the two guard, a spot he has played regularly in his career.
"Jerome playing over at two guard is his natural position," added Majerle. "We have had him at the point because of our situation. He feels more at home at the two and can use his size and does well coming off screens and posts up well. He is one of our captains and does it night in and night out."
"Moving over to two guard has brought back my aggression on the court," said Garrison. "It has given me back the confidence I have had during my career. Coach Majerle has told me to be more aggressive and since we talked I have really tried to assert myself."
As was the case last night, the Antelopes got out quickly building leads of 17 on two occasions. They would take a 37-26 lead into the half, highlighted by 6-for-14 shooting from behind the arc.
Lamar came out aggressively and was able to cut the GCU lead to four at 45-41 with 14:20 left in the game.
Justin Foreman then nailed a three-pointer and
Akachi Okugo's driving layup put GCU up 50-41, thwarting the Cardinals rally.
From there GCU will lead by no less than seven and maintained a double-digit advantage over the last eight minutes of the contest.
Killian Larson continued to be a beast on the glass, finishing tonight with 16 rebounds after a career-high 17 last night. He also chipped in 11 points.
Foreman finished with 12 points and Okugo had 10, both season highs.
The Antelopes shot 42% from the floor, compared to 39% for Lamar. They won the battle on the boards with a 40-38 edge.
"Tonight we really focused on coming out in the second half with the same intensity as we started the game," added Garrison. "It can be hard at times after sitting down and needing to warm back up. Tonight we were ready to play and knew once we weathered their run we could answer and finish off this game."
Grand Canyon will now return home for their final two non-conference home games of the season. The Antelopes will face San Diego Christian on Nov. 29 at 6 p.m. in GCU Arena and will host Vanguard on Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. Tickets can be purchased by going to www.gcuarena.com or by calling the box office at 602.639.8999.
