The Grand Canyon University men's basketball team came out shooting 52.0 percent from the floor in the first half to build a 14-point lead and never looked back, cruising to a 91-61 victory over visiting San Diego Christian tonight at GCU Arena. The 91 points matched the most scored by the Antelopes this season, as they also did so on Nov. 16 against Western New Mexico, as the squad won their third consecutive game.
GCU shot a season-best 57.7 percent from the field on the night (30-for-52) and held the 37-27 advantage in rebounds, including 27 defensive boards. The 'Lopes came out even hotter in the second half, shooting a blistering 63.0 percent (17-for-27).
Killian Larson was one point shy of his career-high, which he set with Dominican (CA) on Jan. 27, 2011 vs. Hawai'i Hilo, as he had 31 points and 13 rebounds for his team-leading fifth double-double this season.
Jerome Garrison finished with 20 points, while
Blake Davis (12) and
Demetrius Walker (11) also added double-digit scoring for GCU. It was the fifth time this season that at least four 'Lopes have scored in double figures as GCU improved to 4-1 in those contests.
Jeff Lowery also saw action in his first game of the season.
The 'Lopes defense did not allow a Hawks basket for the first two and a half minutes as they scored five quick points. San Diego Christian chipped away at the lead, knotting the score at 11 with 14:04 remaining in the first half, but would come no closer than one point for the remainder of the game.
GCU took their largest lead of the half at the 2:08 mark (38-23) and a Garrison layup as the clock was winding down handed GCU a 14-point advantage, 42-28, heading into the locker room.
Larson led the 'Lopes with 18 points and nine rebounds in the half as he was well on his way to yet another double-double. Garrison added 14 points for GCU as the 'Lopes went 13-for-25 from the field. GCU also outrebounded the Hawks 19-14 in the half.
The 'Lopes saw their first 20-point lead of the game after Walker drained two free throws to make it 48-28 with just under 18 minutes to play. A 10-0 GCU run to open the second half built that lead to 52-28 in the first three minutes.
The Hawks scored just two points in the first five minutes of the second half as the 'Lopes continued to build the lead, this time surpassing the 30-point mark at 61-30 with just under 15 minutes to play. For the game, GCU forced 16 Hawks' turnovers, a season-high mark.
The closest San Diego Christian would come was 18 points (71-53) at the 6:34 mark, but scored just eight more points for the remainder of the contest. Off the bench,
Ben Sanders scored a season-best seven points as he was 3-for-3 on shot attempts.
The 'Lopes will next be in action when they welcome Vanguard to GCU Arena for a 7 p.m. matchup on Tuesday. Fans can follow all of the action live by visiting
