Grand Canyon had one of its better sets of the season, but weren't able to put enough of them together in its Western Athletic Conference finale against Idaho at GCU Arena Thursday.
The Antelopes (10-19, 4-12) lost 3-1 by set scores of 25-17, 14-25, 25-17, 25-16.
In the second set, GCU hit .444 with 19 kills (19-3-36) and held Idaho (18-10, 11-5) to just a .186 average.
Shannon Dugan had seven of her career-high 21 kills in the second set. She also had 15 digs. It was her second straight double-double (she had 11 kills and 11 digs Monday against Bakersfield) and tied her for the team lead with senior setter
Jessica Posse with five.
"One of the biggest things we've learned in our first year in Division I is consistency," said coach Kris Naber. "We have to maintain a high level of play and it showed tonight that's something we're struggling with."
The Vandals led from start to finish in the third and fourth sets. They jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the third and 4-0 in the fourth.
Junior libero
Mackenzie Phelps had a match-best 25 digs. Already the program's all-time leader in digs, Phelps became the first in history to reach the 1,800 mark. She has 1,817 heading into the team's final two matches.
Hayleigh Friemoth had eight kills and 10 digs.
Lanie Muys had eight kills, eight digs and two block assists.
Kristen Johannsen had a pair of solo blocks to go with six kills.
Hannah Hankins had four block assists. Posse had 18 assists and seven digs.
"In our last two matches, we want to take what we learned tonight and focus on getting off to a strong start," Naber said.
GCU takes on Abilene Christian 7 p.m. Friday at Antelope Gymnasium and Incarnate Word 7 p.m. Saturday, also at the gym. Abilene Christian will play Incarnate Word at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Prior to Saturday's GCU-UIW match, the Antelopes will honor its five seniors, Muys, Posse, Johannsen,
