Seattle U's Strong Offense Pushes Past GCU

GCU back in action Sunday at noon

In a home match up against the Western Athletic Conference's top team, the Grand Canyon University women's soccer team (2-10-1, 1-5-1) dropped a 5-0 decision to Seattle U (9-2-2, 6-0-0) on the GCU Soccer Field in Phoenix, Ariz.

The Redhawks are the WAC's best offensive squad as they now lead the conference with 30 goals, while their defense recorded its sixth consecutive shutout.

"We were beaten by a far superior team," said head coach Stevie Gill. "They are the top team in our conference and we just could not compete with them. They are well coached and have some fantastic athletes playing for them. It is that simple."

Seattle U outshot the Antelopes 17-7, putting 11 of those on target. GCU keeper Cat Lena picked up five saves in the game. Offensively for the 'Lopes, Chelsea Santos attempted two shots, one of which was on goal.

Seattle scored in the 27^th minute with a goal by Natasha Howe on an assist by Taylor Ritzman to break a scoreless tie. Ritzman drove the ball to the right side of the goal and made a short kick to Howe who found the back of the net.

For her team leading ninth goal, Stephanie Verdoia scored in the 41^st minute, unassisted, bringing Seattle to a 2-0 lead.

Seattle outshot GCU in the first half 10-1. Lena picked up two saves in the first 45 minutes.

Verdoia continued to lead her squad offensively when she scored her second goal of the game on an assist by Mary Hill in the 66^th minute. Two minutes later, Jaquie Wallis picked up her first score of the contest, assisted by Kiana Kraft from the right side.

Julia Moravec scored late in the game during the 86^th minute, assisted by Wallis.

GCU will continue their four-game home stand with a match against Idaho on Sunday at noon. Fans can follow the game via live stats and video at www.gculopes.com.

Tonight's game served as part of GCU's annual Breast Cancer Awareness weekend. The 'Lopes women's soccer team wore pink uniforms and will do so again on Sunday. The women's volleyball team will wear pink uniforms during their home match tomorrow night at 7 p.m. against Utah Valley.

Additionally, Eastbay will bring their "Where Athletes Are" tour to the GCU campus on Sunday for the men's and women's soccer games. Highlighting the tour Eastbay will feature its latest footwear and other apparel from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m..
